Alternative Energy     Alternative energy sources include solar, wind, water and wind-up power. Alternative energy is renewable energy that harnesses clean, unlimited power sources to convert the energy to electricity through a device or system. Alternative energy produces no carbon emissions.

Carbon Footprint     A measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide, as defined by The term is used to refer to the role that our activity plays in global warming.

Cradle to Cradle Certification     Cradle to Cradle Certification rates a company's "environmentally-intelligent" design; allowing customers to make informed purchase decisions. To earn Cradle to Cradle Certification a company is reviewed for the safety and health of it materials; designs for material reutilization; use of water; and social responsibility strategies. Rankings include Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb The alternative to the older incandescent light bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs use roughly 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer. Energy Star estimates that the bulbs save consumers about $30 or more in electricity cost over the life of the bulb. Additionally, compact fluorescents use close to 75 percent less heat, making them safer to use and cutting energy costs associated with home cooling.

As outlined in the President's State of the Union Address in January 2008, all incandescent bulbs will be required to be replaced by compact fluorescents by 2012.

Eighty Plus Certification (80 PLUS)     The 80 PLUS rating certifies a product's power supply. To earn 80 PLUS® performance certification, the power supplies in computers and servers must have be 80% or greater in energy efficiency, at 20%, 50% and 100% of the rated load, with a true power factor of 0.9 or greater. Energy Efficient     As a classification, Energy Efficient indicates any electronics product that is Energy Star Certified.

EPEAT     EPEAT is a system that evaluates the computers for environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. The EPA recommends EPEAT Registered Products. Like LEED Certification, EPEAT Registration is defined by categories (in this case, Gold, Silver and Bronze).

Energy Star     ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy helping to save consumers money and put more energy efficient products and practices into the market. Energy Star Certified consumer electronics yield savings of about 1/3 on home energy bills, with similar savings in greenhouse gas emissions.

Green     Environmentally sound; beneficial. Green-centered movements that examine the impact of human actions on the planet have been around since the Ancient Greeks. The current resurgence in awareness about environmental responsibility profoundly affects current economic, political, business and personal practices.

Incandescent Light Bulb     The most common light bulb used in the United States. The incandescent bulb is made up of a metal heating element surrounded by glass to block oxygen and generate light. During this process, only 5% of the electricity used actually goes to generating light. According to the US Department of Energy, the incandescent bulb is responsible for nearly 10 percent of all the electricity US electricity usage.

In the Green/ In the Know : According to the White House Energy Plan,incandescent bulbs must be phased out in the US by 2012.

Integrated     Bringing together IT and AV systems and products to yield streamlined results that maximize the potential of all of the products involved in creating the whole. IT/AV integration offers opportunity for increased energy efficiency, less waste and enhanced production.

Lamp Recycling     Because lamps contain mercury, lamp recycling is overseen by federal and state regulations and must be conducted at authorized facilities only. Lamp recyclers reduce and eliminate mercury pollution risks by safely remove and replace mercury in lamps in order to reuse the housing and eliminate the waste of producing entirely new lamps, casings and components.

LEED Building Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design; LEED Buildings are certified as environmentally responsible from the ground up: design, building materials, construction and products used in the buildings themselves. The US Green Building Council sets the standards for LEED certification based on its mission of efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Mercury Waste     Mercury is a toxic chemical found in most electronics. For the safety of the environment, specific legislation dictates the proper removal and recycling processes for products that contain mercury. Because of the presence of mercury in electronics, mercury waste is often linked to the term E-Waste.

Optimization/Optimized     A product is considered to be Optimized when its design, manufacturing and delivery are environmentally responsible. This can include a product design that is multi-functional, reduces size, weight and material waste. An optimized product should use recycled packaging materials.

ReLampIt!     The process of taking apart the components of a lamp and replacing the worn out elements with new ones, refitting the lighting component into the existing housing and returning the product to use.

Recycle     The reprocessing of old materials into new products; a cornerstone of Green activities

Reduce     The second of the "R"s; limiting the amount and size of products a consumer uses and limiting the amount of materials that contribute to the product's productionn

Reuse     Using a product one already has for a new purpose, thereby eliminating the need to make or purchase a brand new product

Renew     This "R" speaks to the objective of Green Decision Making, to addthe goal of improvement to the goal of conservation not only by taking less but by attempting to give back more to the environment.

Repurpose     Newer to the familiar list of "R"s, Repurposing refers to finding a new use for existing products and has the following characteristics: Product has responsible end-of-life programs. Manufacturer offers/sponsors end of life, take-back or recycling programs. Products and packaging are recycled, reclaimed and reused. Product lifecycle is extended through refurbishment, resale, reuse or donation

REC     Renewable Energy Credit; allows consumers to purchase energy credits in order to offset energy consumption.

Reclaimed     Along the lines of recycling and repurposing , an item that is reclaimed is procured for a new use, saving it from the trash.

RoHS     Restricted use of Hazardous Substances

RoHS Compliance     RoHS is a European legislative initiative that on July 1, 2006 restricted the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products deemed harmful or toxic to human health and the overall environment. With some exceptions RoHS compliant products do not contain any Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyl and Polybrominated Biphenyl Ethers. Although not legislated in the U.S., consumers still benefit from many manufacturers who sell their products globally and have transitioned their overall manufacturing standards to meet the RoHS compliance standard.

Sustainable     Products and processes used in the present that do not compromise environmental wellbeing for the future. Sustainable products are the green alternative to wasteful products and production.

Stewardship     The EPA defines Environmental Stewardship as the responsibility for environmental quality shared by all those whose actions affect the environment. Stewardship is central to Green Decision Making.

Project Green AV Review of InfoComm STEP Rating System Draft 1

Congratulations to InfoComm and all in the industry who worked together to create this first draft of the STEP Rating System.  This is exemplary work and a major stride for Green AV.

The STEP Rating System hits on two of the most important topics in Green AV for the future.  First, STEP wisely focuses on the full cycle of equipment, awarding points for re-use, sourcing reclaimed equipment and putting in place environmentally responsible plans for equipment’s end of life (including recycling).
